Dr. Marcuetta Sims, Licensed Psychologist

CEO and Founder

My passion is…

…providing therapy for Black women to help them heal from unresolved (often unidentified) childhood trauma and overcome perfectionism so they can know their worth and trust their inner wisdom. I am also the Founder of the Worth, Wisdom, and Wellness Center.

Foundationally, I approach therapy from a person-centered perspective, which means that I believe in your ability to heal, tune in to what you need the most, and develop a sense of self that is solid and consistent with the desires you want from the world.

I meet you right where you are and help you transform from that space. Often, my clients start their work with me feeling critical, harsh, and, quite frankly, mean to themselves. So I create a safe container and hold that space of compassion and unconditional positive regard until they are ready to keep it for themselves.

Therapy offers a path to transformation.

My work is also filtered through multicultural, social justice, and empowerment lenses because I cannot ignore how our society has and continues to disempower and disenfranchise marginalized communities in general, especially Black women. As Beyonce (okay, okay, Malcolm X) said, “The most disrespected, unprotected, and neglected person in America is the Black woman.”

I create spaces of respect, protection, nurturing, and care. We dismantle these internalized oppressive messages and rebuild internal resources to assist with reaching the version of yourself that you most desire.

We address limiting beliefs and fears that keep you playing small while challenging narratives that tell you it’s selfish to ask for more to help you heal from previous experiences that reinforce lack, scarcity, and staying in your comfort zone.

My clients often struggle with the belief that they “need” therapy. They feel accustomed to doing this on their own and question why healing would be any different, so they continue to struggle and suffer.

Struggling is one thing you certainly don’t have to do alone. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Let me help.

As a psychologist, I have supported people in healing from trauma, perfectionism, depression, anxiety, grief, low self-esteem, identity issues, helplessness, hopelessness, loneliness, and various other concerns. I don’t fix people because I don’t believe in broken people. I believe in healing. So, if you’re ready to start your healing journey, let me go with you.

My professional background…

I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology and Theatre with a concentration in Dance from Spelman College. My M.A. and Ph.D. are in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. I have experience providing individual and group therapy, couples counseling, and psychodiagnostic assessment in college counseling centers, private practice, and community mental health settings.

In treatment, I utilize a variety of different interventions, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-based approaches to treatment.

I believe in a holistic treatment model that focuses on improving functioning in several dimensions of wellness, including mind, body, and spirit. I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) and Registered Yoga and Meditation Teacher.

My specialties include Therapy for Perfectionists who feel worthless, Trauma, Perfectionism, Self-Worth,
Disordered Eating Behaviors, Body Image Concerns, Depression, Anxiety, Adjustment, Life Transitions, and College Student Mental Health.

Although our physical practice is in Georgia, I can provide telehealth/virtual sessions to individuals residing in the following states:

75-minute sessions give us more time to:

  • Process what has come up during the session
  • Engage in extended EMDR reprocessing
  • Engage in a grounding/mindfulness exercise at the beginning and/or end of session
  • Incorporate yoga postures and meditation practices into session
  • Create a session that is structured and works ideally for you and your needs

Fun Facts About Me

How do you invest in your wellness?
I spend daily quiet time reading and meditating on the Word, engaging in physical activity, and making time for myself and my loved ones.
What is your favorite quote?

“Your playing small does not serve the world.” – Marianne Williamson

I believe that far too often, we shrink and hide, but who does that serve? How does that help anyone?

What is your favorite book or TV show, and why?
Harry Potter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 – Every last one of them. I’ve read them multiple times as a child and an adult.
Do you have a pet? What's their name? Is there a special meaning behind their name?
I do! I have a cockapoo named Sanzo. We named him after Sansa Stark because we were deep into Game of Thrones, and Sansa’s character Arc was our favorite. At first, we wanted to name him Ginger because he’s very blonde, which was disappointing, but that name already existed.
Do you have a talent or quirk?

When I was in graduate school in Minnesota, I would usually have an hour ride on the bus/train from my home to campus so I decided to teach myself how to knit via Youtube videos. Then my mother in law taught me how to crochet.  So I am now skilled at knitting and crocheting.

What makes therapy with you special or unique?

One thing that makes my approach to therapy unique is that I focus on my clients having a different experience than they may have had in previous treatment.

We spend so much time in our day-to-day lives avoiding our feelings, ignoring what our bodies are trying to tell us, and staying in our heads that we miss out on many opportunities to learn about our moment-to-moment experiences. In our sessions, we make the time and space to notice those small moment-to-moment experiences and sit with the complicated feelings as a way to access the true healing of past wounds.

You won’t end your work with me with a Band-Aid over your experiences. Instead, we will work to get underneath the surface and build your tolerance for difficult things.
